Counselor Connection
Collaboration is essential for school counselors. This mini-blog is for my counselor colleagues to share ideas, lessons and inspiration
Leadership Small Group Love this idea and love this blog! The Classy Counselor! I'm thinking of a "leadership group" for 3-5th graders who may need a little boost of confidence. This is a great outline for running a group like this.

Counselors Room This site has a list of great activities and lessons to do with your students. The list covers all grades K-12 and has activities divided by Academic, Career or Personal/Social. I love that there is a mix between classroom lessons, groups and games. Great resource for school counselors! I recently came across this great resource for school counselors. The West Virginia Department of Education has adapted and modified lessons from Missouri into a comprehensive K-12 list! These lessons are categorized by topic and grade level. Pretty awesome find for school counselors!
Have you ever used Class Dojo? One of our 4th grade teachers used it this year and loved it! It may not be appropriate for School Counselors but it is definitely something we can suggest to our teachers. I'm oftentimes called into a classroom by a teacher having issues with student behavior, this may be a helpful tool to suggest to our teacher colleagues. Below is some information I took from their website. Best part...its FREE! ClassDojo is a classroom tool that helps teachers improve behavior in their classrooms quickly and easily. It also captures and generates data on behavior that teachers can share with parents and administrators. Better learning behaviors, smoother lessons and hassle-free data - and its free! Such an amazing resource for school counselors working with students that have experienced any kind of trauma! Click here to check it out! Two friends and fellow AzSCA members, Judy Bower sand Angela Robinson have recently put up some excellent school counselor lesson plans on their webpage. These lessons were written aligned to Common Core Standards and cover grades K-9! Hope you can use them! (click picture for link) I came across this workbook for Middle School students the other day. A great way for students to start exploring their options early! Be careful printing though, it is 35 pages! YIKES - especially for those of us on a paper restriction at our schools. Love Love Love the videos that Dove puts out for women and girls! Check them out here. Great activity to do with a girls group. Have one girl write down how she describes herself, then have another write down how she views that girl. Or better yet, get moms involved! Can't wait to get back to work from maternity leave to do this with my Club Ophelia girls! I've recently had counselors contacting me asking for my lessons on Sean Covey's 7 Habits. I'm happy to share those with you all. For the last two years I have taught the 7 Habits of Happy Kids to my 3rd graders. (lessons can easily be adapted to other grade levels) I love the way this book takes the 7 Habits and puts them into children's stories that they can understand. I created complete lessons based on these stories. The book can be purchased for less than $10 on Amazon. I have also taught the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens to our 6th graders. (again, these lessons can be adapted to other grade levels). The 6th grade English teacher and I co-created these power point based lessons. As you are reviewing these power points, be sure to note that we utilized youtube videos quite often. In the notes section you should be able to see which slides have a link to a video. These lessons are by no means perfect, but they are a good starting point for anyone wanting to teach the 7 Habits to their students. If you have questions or notice that something is missing as you get started feel free to email me at [email protected].
