Counseling Lesson #1
Each year I try to get into the classrooms as soon as possible! Typically by week two or three if I can swing it. I try to make my first lesson creative and informative for my students. After 11 years at the same school many of my students know me and my program but I always have a handful of newbies and new teacher who could use the information. Below are two of my favorite ways to begin the year with my K-8 students.
Grades K-4
For grades K-4 I would begin each year by reading this great book! It is a coloring book so pages could easily be reproduced for students to color. There are crosswords, word searches etc at the back that all pertain to the School Counseling Program. I used a different one for each grade level so the kids were not getting the exact same lesson each year. I ended the lesson with Counselor Bingo (see below). This helped the students get to know one another and gain an understanding of the role of the School Counselor in their school.

Grades 5-8
I came across this blog post by Scrapbook for a School Counselor a few years ago. I love love love this lesson! Even if it requires me to cart a box full of rocks around with me for a couple of weeks! I think it really captures the work that we do and helps students gain a complete understanding of all that we offer for them.
