Confident Women
I am passionate about working with young women to help increase self-esteem and to learn to love their bodies. Here I will share videos and articles that inspire me in hopes of inspiring the girls of Franklin high.
Recently in Club Ophelia we read The Paperbag Princess by Robert Munsch. This is not your traditional fairy tale - by traditional I mean, the prince did not save the day! In this great book for girls, the princess not only saves herself, but also saves the prince! What a great message to send our girls! Unfortunately for the prince he did not approve of the paperbag dress that Princess Elizabeth worse to rescue him. So...she LEFT HIM and they did not get married after all! I start this lesson with the girls doing a check in where they report out who their favorite princess is and why. Then I ask them to tell me what all of those princesses have in common (the all needed to be saved by a prince). The girls caught on very quickly as to why we were reading this story. Afterward, the girls were put into groups of 2-3 and told to create their own lifesize paperbag dress! They loved this activity. Although, beware -it took them several weeks to get their dresses just right! They then had to write a brief description of the dress and of Princess Elizabeth. We ended this lesson with a short fashion show for all kindergarten girls. The little girls loved hearing the story and spending time with big girls and the older girls enjoyed spreading their "girl power" message to our kinders. Below are a few pictures of the lovely dresses that were created!
