Last week we held a Club Ophelia movie night and watched the Lifetime Movie, No One Would Tell. This movie follows a discussion we had in February with Corine Reygoza from the New Life Center about Domestic Violence and Dating Abuse. Here's a description of the movie High school student 16-year-old Stacy Collins has never been in a relationship, as she has always been shy and never felt like part of the crowd. So when she hears that Bobby, a popular student and athlete, is interested in her, she immediately decides to go for it. But not soon after, Bobby starts to get jealous and manipulates her, constantly telling her what she can and cannot do. Things eventually escalate even further when Bobby would get physically violent with Stacy if she did anything that he didn't approve. With constant fighting, yelling, misunderstandings, and bruises, it is not long before Stacy's mother and friends suspect that something is wrong and start to worry that her life may be in danger. Despite the situation and constant pleas from others, Stacy would not let Bobby go and would take his side, refusing to end the relationship and telling everyone that everything is okay. Eventually, she comes to her senses and decides to break things off. But, at the last minute, she makes one last decision. However, her decision would lead to a deadly consequence. If you or a friend finds yourself in a dangerous situation with a boyfriend, please talk to a trusted adult! Come talk to me! Here is a great website that has some important information that may help you. Here's some information straight from the LOVE IS RESPECT website Is This Abuse? Dating abuse is a pattern of destructive behaviors used to exert power and control over a dating partner. While we define dating violence as a pattern, that doesn't mean the first instance of abuse is not dating violence. It just recognizes that dating violence usually involves a series of abusive behaviors over a course of time. Warning Signs of Abuse Because relationships exist on a spectrum, it can be hard to tell when a behavior crosses the line from healthy to unhealthy or even abusive. Use these warning signs of abuse to see if your relationship is going in the wrong direction:

Today we watched the ABC Family Movie, Cyberbully. Here's a description of what the movie is about; Cyberbully follows Taylor Hillridge (Emily Osment), a teenage girl who falls victim to online bullying, and the cost it takes on her as well as her friends and family. Taylor is a pretty seventeen-year-old student dealing with her parents' recent divorce and painfully aware of her lower social status in high school. When her mom gives her a computer for her birthday, Taylor is excited by the prospect of going online to meet new friends without her mother always looking over her shoulder. However, Taylor soon finds herself the victim of betrayal and bullying while visiting a popular social website. Obsessed with the damaging posts, she begins to withdraw from her family and friends, including her life-long best friend, Samantha Caldone (Kay Panabaker). Tormented and afraid to face her peers at school, Taylor is pushed to an extreme breaking point. It is only after this life-changing event that Taylor learns that she is not alone – meeting other teens, including a classmate, who have had similar experiences. Taylor's mom, Kris (Kelly Rowan), reels from the incident and takes on the school system and state legislation to help prevent others from going through the same harrowing ordeal as her daughter. There are several great websites out there that offer support to students who feel they are being cyber bulled. Here are two that offer some great ideas for what to do. No matter what - always talk to a trusted adult when this is happening to you or to a friend! |
