Confident Women
I am passionate about working with young women to help increase self-esteem and to learn to love their bodies. Here I will share videos and articles that inspire me in hopes of inspiring the girls of Franklin high.
This is a work in progress, but I was asked to share so others could begin this project with their own groups! As we finish I will update this post with new photos. Our Affirmation Tiles were inspired by several other projects. Operation Beautiful, one my absolute favorite projects to do with my girls gave us the idea of posting these affirmations in the bathrooms of our school. We do the post-it notes each year but this year wanted to do something more permanent. So I then turned to Pinterest for more inspiration and came across these tiles on Tabitha P's blog Scrapbook of a School Counselor. I made a few modifications and we were off to start our project! Once finished 100 of these will be hung in the girls bathrooms around our school. Materials Needed: Ceramic Tiles from Home Depot or Lowe's (less than 20 cents each. I purchased 100 for about $15) Ceramic Tile Adhesive from Home Depot ($4.97) Paint Markers or Sharpies (I purchased a pack of paint markers, like these from Wal-Mart). Scapbook Paper Modge Podge Process After watching a few inspiring YouTube videos such as the ones on Operation Beautiful's site. I introduced the idea of making a more lasting impression on our school to the girls. I made two ties in advance to use as examples for the girls. To make the one on the left, select scrapbook paper and either cut or rip it to fit onto the tile. I wrote my message on the paper before adhering it to the tile with Modge Podge. Once the paper was secured onto the tile I allowed it to dry. Once dry, I used Modge Podge all over the tile to keep the paper from coming off the tile. To make the one on the right. Simply write on the tile with the Paint Markers or Sharpies. My girls enjoyed getting out their phones to find quotes to put on the tiles. DO NOT use Modge Podge over the marker/paint that is directly applied to the tile! It will wipe the marker right off.
Once the tiles were designed by the girls I brought them home to bake them. This allows the paint/marker to set into the tile and hopefully not wipe off. I put them into the oven, then set the oven to 350 degrees. It is important to put the tiles into a cool oven and allow it to heat up with the tiles inside. After about 30 min I turned the oven off and left the tiles inside the oven as it cooled. That is where we are today! Next week we will design more tiles (100 in total), then collaborate with our custodians to install them in our girls bathrooms. I'll post more photos as the project progresses!

What can we learn from this video? Which girl do you most identify with? The mean girls? Lilly? Or Anahi? What would you do if this happened to a classmate of yours?
I cannot wait to see what my girls do with this idea! Check out the Honest Beauty Project's Facebook page. |
